Filipino community advocates Greg Macabenta, Atty. Rodel Rodis and Rudy Asercion engage in a friendly war of words through the traditional Filipino form of poetic debate called “Balagtasan.” Macabenta, Rodis and Asercion are past Hermano Mayors of the Pistahan Parade and Festival, the annual Filipino American Arts fair held at Yerba Buena Gardens in San Francisco. Last August 13, the trio take on the topic of divorce, which is currently a hot issue in the predominantly Catholic country of Philippines. Recently, Malta has legalized divorce, leaving the Philippines, the only country other than the Vatican not recognizing the legal dissolution. As Macabenta acts as moderator, Rodis takes on the side favoring divorce while Asercion presents the side of those who disagree with it.
