quick-thinking, self-starting and creative individuals
who wish to gain invaluable experience in ethnic
media. This is a non-paying position. If interested,
please submit your resume to Gemma Nemenzo,
Associate Publisher, Filipinas Magazine, GBM
Building, 1580 Bryant St., Daly City, CA 94015
or g.nemenzo@filipinasmag.com. For editorial
interns, please submit 3 writing samples along
with your resume.
WRITERS
Filipinas is inviting young people from ages
18 to 35 to send in essays, from 750 to 1,000
words, about your thoughts and experiences on
being Filipino in America.
Mail your entry to New Voices, c/o Filipinas,
GBM Building, 1580 Bryant St., Daly CIty, CA
94015 or e-mail to mail@FILIPINASMAG.com and
write “New Voices Entry” in the
subject line. Chosen essays may be edited for
length. Entries will not be returned.
CARTOONISTS
Filipinas is inviting cartoonists to send in
their editorial cartoons with the theme of “Filipino
American Experiences.”
Mail your entries to Filipinas Magazine Editorial

City, CA 94015, or e-mail to r.virata@filipinasmag.com
and write “editorial cartoon entry”
on the subject line. E-mailed entries should
be 300 dpi, at least 4” x 5” in

be published in the magazine. Entries will not
be returned.
Submission Guidelines for Articles, Letters
and Photos
Many of you who sent us E-mail asked about how
to work with us as writers, get copies of articles
featured in the magazine, get reprint permission,
etc. We have decided to reprint an editorial
from Filipinas Magazine, to explain how you
can be a part of Filipinas Magazine.
WRITING
AND SHOOTING PHOTOS FOR FILIPINAS
We're
always looking for free-lancers from all parts
of North America. Send or E-mail a query letter
describing your proposed subject; enclose samples
of your previous work, if any. If we like your
idea, we'll send you a contract. Publication,
however, must still depend on the quality of
your final submission. You have to do it for
love and community spirit because our fees are
on the low end. Unsolicited manuscripts are
not compensated; ditto published submissions
to "Word" and other sections where
the caveat is indicated. As a small, busy staff,
we prefer queries by regular mail or E-mail.
Please allow two to three weeks for a response.
Using "Community News & Events"
We'd
like nothing better than to post announcements
from all over - East Coast, West Coast, North,
South, wherever there are Filipinos with activities
to publicize. But we must get your announcements
a good two months before your event. It's simply
because we must prepare an issue of the magazine
two months ahead. (For example, we're already
finalizing the next issue as you read this.)
So, it's not that we're partial to California,
we just need to get your info two months ahead
of your event.
Requesting
Info/Copies of Articles
We
often get requests for "information on
Filipino Americans," mainly from students
who must finish their papers "by tomorrow."
Hey, we understand. We were students before.
But please also understand that there's no way
we can help you in these emergencies - we're
neither equipped nor staffed for that. It's
also better to be specific in your request.
We might be able to help you if you want photocopies
of certain articles from back issues. Simply
state the title and issue date, or if you don't
have the information, just the topic; send us
a $3 check (per article) for research and handling.
You can always order an entire back issue for
$5 (cost of first class mail included), if it
is still in stock; or look us up in your school
library; if we're not there, ask your library
to subscribe.
"Filipinos
You Should Know"
Introduce
us to someone you know who has a unique occupation,
is an achiever and role model, or has had inspiring
experiences. Send us basic information about
the person and how he or she may be reached;
if possible, include a clear black and white
or color photo (no passport or Polaroid mugs,
please). Tell us why he or she should be featured.
We'll see if you're on the money. We want nominees
from everywhere.
Letters
to the Editor
We
appreciate hearing from you and knowing what
you have to say about the subjects we've tackled.
The shorter and terser your letter, the better
the chances of publication. We've received a
number of long expositions and warm attempts
to share experiences and thoughts with other
readers. Unfortunately, we've had to choose
carefully among them and do drastic editing
for length. So please write, and write often,
but keep it concise.
Reaching
Authors or Subjects
Unless
instructed otherwise, we do not give out addresses
and telephone numbers of freelance writers or
persons featured in our pages. If you request
such information, we'll automatically forward
your letter to the person concerned and leave
it at that.
Permission
to Reprint Articles
Please address all reprint requests to The Publisher.
There may be a small reprint fee involved, depending
on how the reprints will be used.
